New Patient TMJ Exam

Easy and informative. We look forward to meeting you and answering all your questions. Our goal is to make you feel comfortable visiting our practice while providing the best care possible.

Before You Arrive

Once you have scheduled your appointment by phone, our new patient form is available to download on our website, Please take the time to complete the form before your visit. TMD is a complex disorder that requires Dr Martusiewicz to ask a lot of questions during your first appointment. The more information you’re able to prepare and share with us, the better the treatment plan we’ll be able to provide. Even if you’re experiencing a symptom that you believe is unrelated to your jaw or facial pain, it could be a lesser-known symptom of TMD, making it

important to share with us.

Your First Visit

Dr Martusiewicz will sit down to have a diagnostic conversation. In this conversation, she will ask you many questions about your symptoms, their history, and any relevant changes in your medical and/or dental prole. She will ask questions about your sleep, life changes, and stressors that you may be confronting. Next, Dr Martusiewicz will examine how your jaw functions from an orthopedic perspective, focusing not only on the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) but also on the muscles of your jaw, head, and neck. She will be looking for clues to determine the origins of your pain, the clicking or popping in your jaw joint, or your jaw motion limitations. She will also perform a soft tissue oral examination, and assess your teeth and how they come together.

After a thorough clinical evaluation, Dr Martusiewicz will present her recommendations and whether further steps should be taken at the office. If Dr Martusiewicz believes it is important to investigate your TMJ symptoms further, the next step is to obtain a full set of diagnostic records-3D x-ray, photos, and mounted molds of your teeth. These records provide tremendous insight into your unique situation. After Dr Martusiewicz has thoroughly examined your diagnostic records, she will sit down with you to discuss the proposed custom treatment plan, risks, benefits, and finances.
